Los ingleses de Gran Canaria a finales del siglo XIX sembraron por primera vez el tomate canario, y comenzó un negocio de producción y exportación que dio mucha vida a nuestra isla y mucho trabajo para nuestra gente……………………………The English in Gran Canaria at the end of the 19th century sowed the Canarian tomato for the first time, and started a production and export business that gave a lot of life to our island and a lot of work for our people.
Santiago Cazorla es Jardinero y es de Cercados de Araña, allí donde la Presa de Chira, y Angel Peña, también Jardinero, del Gamonal de Telde. Dos lugares emblemáticos de nuestra hermosa isla.
La idea era hacerles unas preguntas pero en lugar de eso se me ocurrió hacer una charla informal con ellos, y el rato que pasamos juntos hablando del tomate canario fue un rato mágico, de esos que solo los hombres sabios de nuestros campos saben sembrar, un rato de charla que nos transportó a las cuarterías del sureste grancanario allá por los años 70 y antes……………

Santiago Cazorla is a gardener from Cercados de Araña, where the Presa de Chira is located, and Angel Peña, also a gardener, from Gamonal de Telde. Two emblematic places of our beautiful island.
The idea was to ask them some questions but instead I thought of having an informal chat with them, and the time we spent together talking about the Canarian tomato was a magical moment, one of those that only the wise men of our fields know how to sow, a time of chat that transported us to the quartiers of the southeast of Gran Canaria back in the 70’s and earlier.
