La generosidad en 1949 de cinco fabulosos equipos hicieron posible la Unión Deportiva Las Palmas. El Estadio Insular llevaba en su alma una historia de cuento única en el futbol mundial.
1.- La Unión Deportiva Las Palmas.
El Estadio Santiago Bernabéu sigue en el Paseo de la Castellana de Madrid y el Heliodoro Rodríguez López en la calle San Sebastián de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. En muchas ciudades del mundo han conservado con mimo su Patrimonio Arquitectónico. El Estadio Insular, que fue un rincón preferido por familias enteras de Gran Canaria, y de toda Canarias, incluso de enamorados de la Unión Deportiva Las Palmas de fuera de las islas, rincón ansiado de vivir en una tarde futbol por gente de todos los lugares, ese emblemático lugar hoy es un recuerdo mal conservado y mal atendido.
Por desgracia, y en nombre y uso de la modernidad, en Gran Canaria han desaparecido muchos de los lugares que fueron mágicos, bellos, irrepetibles. El Puente de Piedra y el Puente de Palo, que salvaban la conexión por encima del Barranco de Guiniguada, allá donde todos los niños y mayores iban a hacerse una foto de recuerdo, lo que unía dos partes bellísimas y diferenciadas de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, que delimitaban y marcaban el espacio donde nació nuestra ciudad, el Real de Las Palmas, esa estampa idílica de ciudad antigua, única y singular, desapareció para siempre para dar paso a la gran población que crecía y crecía.
El Estadio Insular fue uno de los rincones más queridos por todos los canarios, porque llevaba en su alma una historia de cuento única en el futbol mundial. Se inauguró el 25 de diciembre de 1944 con una capacidad de 8.000 espectadores creado para el Marino Club de Futbol, que en 1949 se fusionó con el CD Gran Canaria, el Atlético Club, El Real Club Victoria y el Arenas Club para fundar la Unión Deportiva Las Palmas. Campo del Marino fue su primer nombre, Estadio Las Palmas poco después y en 1951 lo compró el Cabildo de Gran Canaria llamándose desde entonces Estadio Insular y ampliando su aforo a 22.000 personas.
Se inauguró el 9 de octubre de 1944, entre una Selección de Las Palmas y una Selección del Puerto. En aquella época al centro de la ciudad se la llamaba Las Palmas y a la zona de las Isletas el Puerto, separadas por una larga carretera y muchas dunas. El primer partido oficial del Equipillo, pocos meses después de su fundación, fue el 9 de octubre de 1949 contra una Selección del Puerto, y el último el 29 de junio de 2003 frente al Elche CF.
Pero lo más importante de todo este relato que queremos actualizar está en el alma, en los rincones más interiores de la Unión Deportiva Las Palmas. En la generosidad en 1949 de cinco fabulosos equipos que desaparecieron por decisión propia para hacer posible que el futbol técnico y brillante canario se desarrollara fuera de las islas, y en la magnífica gestión para conseguirlo de Don Manuel Rodríguez Monroy. En que tan solo dos años después, en 1951, ascendiera a la Primera División Española. Que el 26 de marzo de 1952 todos los periódicos del mundo hablaran del equipo amarillo recién nacido, único que ganó al Millonarios de Colombia en su gira por España, al equipo donde jugaba el que fue mejor jugador del mundo, Alfredo DiStefano, marcando así una fecha de oro para el Estadio insular. Que en 1962 la Selección Juvenil de Las Palmas, los inolvidables Diablillos Amarillos, se proclamara Campeona de España, que en 1964 asciende a Primera División, en 1968 se queda Tercero en la Liga, y al año siguiente Subcampeón permaneciendo en la élite del futbol español 19 años seguidos.
Entre 1971 y 1975 el infortunio y la tristeza se apodera del equipo con los fallecimientos de dos de sus mejores jugadores de toda su historia, Juan Guedes y Antonio Afonso Tonono. Este tremendo suceso afectó al equipo y llenó de tristeza el Estadio Insular, y desde entonces ya nada ha sido igual, solo una etapa brillante con los argentinos Carnevali, Wolff, Brindisi y Morete entre 1973 y 1980.
La Unión Deportiva Las Palmas con el Estadio Insular, Equipillo y Cuna de la pasión, nobleza, talento y calidad del jugador canario, y de una afición entendida y respetuosa con el contrario, un tándem excepcional en lo futbolístico y en lo social, ya son historia de una época inolvidable e irrepetible. El Equipillo volverá, no sabemos cuándo, a dar nuevas alegrías a una afición espectacular, pero el mítico y apreciado Estadio Insular es ya solo un recuerdo.
2.- EL Estadio Insular.
Las calles de la ciudad se llenaban de auténticas mareas de camisetas y banderas amarillas que partían desde San Cristóbal y la Isleta hacia el barrio de las Alcaravaneras y desde Escaleritas y Schamann hasta el Paseo de Chil. Las tardes de domingo eran una fiesta espectacular de familias enteras deseando llegar a su puesto en las gradas de cemento, sin separaciones, donde para sentarte tenías que encajarte entre los dos aficionados a tus lados. Pero antes de entrar al Estadio muchos pasaban por el Bar Viena, en la esquina de Pio XII, a tomarse un café o unas tapas, y comprar algo en el Bazar al lado de la taquilla de preferencia, y además el espectáculo de los aficionados subiendo y bajando las escaleras en busca de la Grada Norte o de la de Preferencia.
Mucho antes el viejo recinto se llamaba Estadio de Las Palmas, donde jugaba el Marino C.F., en un campo de tierra, hasta que en el año 1951 llegó el Estadio Insular y el campo de césped. Pasaron Animadores excepcionales como Paco Zuppo, tinerfeño con corazón amarillo, que cantando el “Riqui Raca” en el centro del campo animaba a la apasionante afición grancanaria. Fernando el Bandera que desde la Grada Naciente comenzaba a animar con su famoso “Tarariiii” ataviado con su sombrero mexicano, un poncho, la bandera amarilla y sobre todo su Corneta para seguir con su riqui raca, que poco después paso al “Pio Pio” y el Arribadellos”
Las gradas siempre llenas, los balcones del edificio de viviendas con propietarios y amigos animando, incluso años antes las dunas de arenas en lo alto de la grada norte repletas de aficionados y las banderas con la clasificación en la grada de fedora contribuían a un ambiente festivo como en pocos campos de futbol.
Por este estadio pasaron los mejores jugadores del mundo, DiStefano, Kubala, Beckembauer, Johan Cruyff, Maradona, y sobre todo Polo, Oramas, Molowni, Alfonso Silva, los Diablillos Amarillos, Tonono, Guedes y Germán, y uno de los mejores Equipos de Futbol que he visto: Ulacia/Oregui, Aparicio, Tonono, Martín Marrero, Castellano, Guedes, León, Gilberto II, José Juan, Germán y Gilberto I sin olvidar la etapa de Carnevali, Wolf, Brindisi y Morete.
Y a todo este marco maravilloso que dignifica cualquier estadio del mundo hay que sumar La Afición Amarilla. Ya dentro de el estadio, con tiempo suficiente para ambientar el partido, familias enteras disfrutaban del mejor clima del mundo para compartir entre todos una Bota de Vino y El Calamar Seco, con aromas cercanos a mar, con el olor al puro, con los nervios a flor de piel en espera de que se viera salir por el túnel de vestuarios al Equipillo. El Estadio Insular acogía a niños de todas las edades, desde los más pequeños pasando por la tropa de juveniles federados que entrabamos gratis con un carnet, hasta los más mayores.
Ilusión, magia, alegría, cercanía, compañerismo, nuevos amigos, y manos en alto y abrazos cuando llegaba el gol que siempre esperábamos y siempre llegaba, con la radio en el oído escuchando el Carrusel porque todos los partidos se jugaban a la misma hora, y la emoción enorme cuando se oía ¡Hay gol en el Insular!
Pero los poderes públicos en nuestra isla de Gran Canaria siempre han sido vencidos por la modernidad, aun en contra de templos sagrados como debió ser nuestro Estadio Insular, un campo de futbol admirado en Canarias y fuera de Canarias. En los años noventa ya se discutía la construcción de un nuevo estadio para sustituir al recinto de todas las glorias del futbol canario.
La Edición del Premio Montblanc a la Cultura en Canarias de 1997 fue destinada a la Arquitectura, y para el Premio al Joven Valor en la provincia de Las Palmas se pidió que presentaran soluciones al tráfico de coches y de personas en el entorno del Estadio Insular. Se presentaron ocho estudios de jóvenes arquitectos y resultó ganador la propuesta presentada por el equipo compuesto por David y Daniel Mallo, María Febles y Octavio Rubio. Se aportaban propuestas, muchas propuestas, gracias al acierto del Jurado del Premio en la elección del tema y de los candidatos presentados. Al menos era un guiño a los que decidían la continuidad o no de nuestro estadio.
Pero finalmente la drástica decisión fue tomada y el Estadio Insular demolido, para pasar al Estadio de Gran Canaria, con aforo de 32.000 espectadores y entrada media en los últimos años de 11.000. Mal cambio para la afición, para el equipo y para la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria que hoy seguría siendo centro de atención del futbol entendido.

CANARIAS STORIES 4.- The Legend Island Stadium (Estadio Insular) in the success of the best Las Palmas Sports Union (Unión Deportiva Las Palmas)
The generosity in 1949 of five fabulous teams made the Sports Union possible. The Insular Stadium carried in its soul a story unique in world football.
1.- The Las Palmas Sports Union (Unión Deportiva Las Palmas)
The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is still on Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana and Heliodoro Rodríguez López on San Sebastián de Santa Cruz street in Tenerife. In many cities of the world they have preserved their Architectural Heritage with care. The Insular Stadium, which was a corner preferred by entire families of Gran Canaria, and throughout the Canary Islands, even lovers of the Las Palmas Sports Union from outside the islands, a corner eager to live in an afternoon football by people from all places, that emblematic place today is a poorly preserved and poorly attended memory.
Unfortunately, and in the name and use of modernity, in Gran Canaria many of the places that were magical, beautiful, unrepeatable have disappeared. The Insular Stadium was one of the most beloved corners of all canaries, because it carried in its soul a story unique in world football. This tremendous event affected the team and filled the Estadio Insular with sadness, and since then nothing has been the same, only a brilliant stage with the Argentines Carnevali, Wolff, Brindisi and Morete between 1973 and 1980.
The Las Palmas Sports Union with the Insular Stadium, Equipillo and Cradle of the passion, nobility, talent and quality of the Canary player, and of an understanding and respectful fans with the opposite, an exceptional tandem in football and social, are already history of an unforgettable and unrepeatable time. The Equipillo will return, we do not know when, to give new joys to a spectacular love, but the mythical and appreciated Insular Stadium is already just a memory.
2.- The Insular Stadium. (Estadio Insular)
The streets of the city were filled with real tides of T-shirts and yellow flags departing from San Cristobal and the Isleta to the Neighborhood of the Alcaravaneras and from Escaleritas and Schamann to Paseo de Chil. Sunday afternoons were a spectacular feast of whole families wishing to arrive at their post in the cement stands, without separations, where to sit you had to fit between the two fans on your sides. But before entering the Stadium many passed through the Vienna Bar, on the corner of Pio XII, to have a coffee or some tapas, and buy something in the Bazaar next to the ticket office of preference, and also the spectacle of fans going up and down the stairs in search of the North Grade or the Preferred One.
Long before the old venue was called Estadio de Las Palmas, where Marino C.F. played, on a dirt field, until in 1951 came the Estadio Insular and the turf field. Through this stadium passed the best players in the world, DiStefano, Kubala, Beckembauer, Johan Cruyff, Maradona, and above all Polo, Oramas, Molowni, Alfonso Silva, the Yellow Devils, Tonono, Guedes and Germán, and one of the best Football Teams I have ever seen: Ulacia/Oregui, Aparicio, Tonono, Martín Marrero, Castellano, Guedes, León, Gilberto II, José Juan, Germán and Gilberto I without forgetting the Stage of Carnevali, Wolf, Brindisi and Morete.
And to all this wonderful framework that dignifies any stadium in the world you have to add the Yellow Afition. Already inside the stadium, with enough time to set the match, entire families enjoyed the best climate in the world to share between all a Wine Boot and El Squid Seco, with aromas close to the sea, with the smell of cigar, with nerves in skin flower waiting to be seen coming out through the dressing room tunnel to equipillo. The Insular Stadium welcomed children of all ages, from the youngest to the troop of federated juveniles who entered for free with a card, to the older ones.
Illusion, magic, joy, closeness, companionship, new friends, and high hands and hugs when the goal I always expected and always came came, with the radio in his ear listening to the Carousel because all the matches were played at the same time, and the enormous emotion when you heard There is a goal in the Insular!
But the public authorities on our island of Gran Canaria have always been defeated by modernity, even against sacred temples such as our Estadio Insular, a football field admired in the Canary Islands and outside the Canary Islands. In the 1990s, the construction of a new stadium was being discussed to replace the venue for all the glories of Canary football.
The 1997 Montblanc Prize for Culture in the Canary Islands was intended for Architecture, and for the Young Value Award in the province of Las Palmas it was requested that they present solutions to the traffic of cars and people in the environment of the Estadio Insular. Eight studies of young architects were presented and the proposal presented by the team composed of David and Daniel Mallo, María Febles and Octavio Rubio was the winner. Proposals were made, many proposals, thanks to the success of the Prize Jury in the choice of the subject and the candidates presented. At least it was a nod to those who decided wither the continuity or not of our stadium.
