USA for Africa (Union of Support of Artists for Africa) was the name under which 45 well-known artists, mainly American, led by Michael Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie and Bruce Springsteen met to record the single «We Are the World «in 1985. The song quickly reached number one in the charts in the United States and England, as well as in many other countries in the world. The record was produced by Quincy Jones, who also arranged it. The considerable profits of the USA for Africa Foundation were used to treat famine and disease in Africa; critics, however, claimed that the money reached the governments of African countries, rather than the affected population itself.
