De los antiguos griegos tomamos la palabra música. Los griegos tomaron sus ideas musicales de Mesopotamia y Egipto. La música en Grecia abarcaba también a la poesía y a la danza. Atribuían su origen a los dioses. Platón la consideraba como la base de la educación. La escritura musical la realizaban con las letras del alfabeto. Existían muchas leyes y reglas que regían la música: diferentes escalas que a su vez formaban modos.
