A la atención del Secretario General del PSOE Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón.

Es muy fácil, y muy complicado al mismo tiempo, explicarte por qué eres el principal responsable de mi solicitud de baja del PSOE, como militante y como simpatizante, después de más de 18 años.

El camino fácil sería afirmar lo que muchos ciudadanos y analistas políticos opinan conmigo. Que eres el Secretario General más desideologizado, narcisista, falaz y antidemocrático que ha tenido el PSOE desde su fundación en 1879.

El camino difícil obliga a explicar cómo es posible que hayas dilapidado en menos de cuatro años el inmenso capital político que los militantes te regalamos en 2017. Un capital que, además, venía a fraguar una doble evolución de gran calado histórico en la política española contemporánea: por un lado, la culminación de un largo proceso de movilización y rebeldía que los militantes veníamos protagonizando, sin ningún apoyo de las élites del partido, desde 2010; por otro lado, la posibilidad real de convergencia de esa rebeldía socialista con los intensos movimientos sociales y políticos herederos del 15-M.

Los militantes del PSOE, tal como reconoces en tu Manual de resistencia, fuimos, de manera espontánea, los que reaccionamos a la inercia oligárquica del partido el 1 de octubre de 2016 y te pusimos en bandeja protagonizar la revolución que el PSOE necesitaba. La consecuencia lógica de esa revolución habría sido un partido más democrático y más socialista, la necesaria regeneración de la política nacional y la imprescindible reinvención de la izquierda española.

En ello confluimos personas muy distintas. Quienes siempre creyeron en ti, quienes se rebelaron visceralmente contra el pulso oligárquico que te defenestró, quienes te vieron como un mal menor frente a Susana Díaz y quienes, como yo, entendieron que era la última posibilidad, por pequeña que fuera, de recolocar al PSOE en su espacio histórico natural que, además, es el espacio que la sociedad de nuestro tiempo necesita que ocupe. En algunos casos, nos implicamos hasta el punto de defender «nuestro proyecto» (ahora sabemos que no era el tuyo) en el ámbito autonómico; en mi caso, recorrí 5.000 kilómetros de Extremadura como candidato en las primarias regionales. El resultado es que ahora solo hay dos tipos de militantes en el PSOE: los que sabemos que nos traicionaste y los que aún no lo saben.

Aunque algunos ya lo advertimos durante la campaña de primarias de 2017 —y, de hecho, tú y tu equipo nos represaliasteis por ello, incluso antes de llegar a ser Secretario General—, tu objetivo nunca tuvo que ver con el PSOE ni con España. Tú único objetivo siempre fuiste tú mismo: alcanzar el poder para cumplir un ambicioso y personalista sueño de llegar a Moncloa y vivir de la política el resto de tu vida. No había nada más detrás: ni una ideología, ni una ética ni una visión o misión histórica.

Tu gestión como Secretario General y como Presidente del Gobierno solamente han confirmado aquella intuición temprana que algunos señalamos hace cuatro años: has logrado que el PSOE como partido prácticamente desaparezca, mediante el estrangulamiento de su funcionamiento orgánico y la dirección mesiánica que ejerces; la relevancia de la militancia se ha volatilizado por completo, no digamos ya su tradicional capacidad crítica y de empuje democrático; has incumplido, casi de principio a fin, las Resoluciones del 39º Congreso que te entronizó; has realizado algunos de los pactos más vergonzantes que se recuerdan con los nacionalistas y separatistas con tal de llegar a Moncloa y permanecer en ella; y, lo que es peor de todo, has conducido al PSOE, desde el Gobierno, a realizar políticas liberales que nada tienen que ver con La Internacional que cantabas al terminar cada mitin en 2017. Esto último incluye una gestión de la pandemia de COVID-19 en la que al final solo cuenta la «responsabilidad individual», en la línea del PP más ultraliberal de Isabel Díaz Ayuso, cuando, precisamente, la pandemia ha sido una oportunidad histórica para la izquierda de defender un nuevo modelo de sociedad ajeno al capitalismo salvaje, en el que las decisiones colectivas fueran capaces de construir un mundo más equilibrado medioambientalmente, más sano, más humano y, por todo ello, más socialista; por contra, tu única aportación ha sido correr al rebufo del neoliberalismo rampante y acudir a Europa a pedir crédito, tanto crédito que endeuda a varias generaciones para poder sostener el mismo sistema que había antes de la pandemia, es decir, un sistema que enriquece al 1% mientras el 99% sigue sobreviviendo bajo distintas formas de esclavitud cotidiana.

Desde que ingresé en el PSOE he sido siempre un militante crítico ante la necesidad de renovación: con los compañeros Felipe González, Joaquín Almunia, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba y José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Pero ninguno logró nunca acercarme a la sensación más desagradable que llevo sintiendo ya demasiados meses: que me dé vergüenza militar bajo las siglas que tú diriges.

Tres han sido las líneas rojas que creía que nunca se podrían rebasar para que me tuviera que ir del PSOE. La primera, ética, es decir, la de hacerme cómplice con mi militancia de una gestión dañina no solo para las clases sociales que el PSOE dice representar, sino, en este caso, también para la convivencia de todo un país. La segunda, ideológica: la abierta apuesta liberal que supone toda tu gestión de Gobierno, y que hace indiferenciable al PSOE de lo que habría hecho Ciudadanos, o de lo que están haciendo otros partidos liberales europeos, incluso en muchas cosas de lo que haría el PP. La tercera línea roja, en relación con valores estrictamente democráticos y de Estado, fue el indulto a los independentistas catalanes, que no solo humilla a los españoles que tratan de construir una Cataluña leal a la convivencia y la legalidad, sino que además somete las necesidades de futuro de todo un país a tus intereses personales de continuidad en el Gobierno.

Esta catástrofe ética, ideológica, social y política se encontró con tu equivalente en Unidas Podemos, un Pablo Iglesias no menos narcisista, no menos falaz, y no menos antidemocrático. Y así, de esta doble traición a militantes y ciudadanos que creyeron en una izquierda renovada, ha surgido un Gobierno cuyo único objetivo es sostener el poder en beneficio de sus detentadores. Un Gobierno que ha elevado ya a la ultraderecha a las mayores cotas de poder desde 1977, que ha renunciado a cualquier transformación social de calado, que legisla de espaldas a la clase trabajadora (en ocasiones, en su contra), que está profundizando en la herida política y territorial provocada por el separatismo, que ha contribuido a cavar más hondo en la trampa de la diversidad que divide a la clase obrera y, en fin, que no tiene intención de poner en riesgo su continuidad en el poder dando la cara por sus simpatizantes y votantes.

Seguramente ya no lo recordarás, pero en 2012 tú eras el coordinador del programa de la Conferencia Política del PSOE, y desde Bases en Red, el primer gran grupo a nivel nacional de militantes organizados para cambiar el PSOE, propusimos un largo y trabajado texto como enmienda a la totalidad del documento marco; yo coordinaba entonces aquel grupo de trabajo y tú, aunque de mala gana, incluiste la mayoría de nuestras propuestas en la ponencia final, convirtiéndose desde entonces en hilo conductor de todos los candidatos que querían ganar las primarias nacionales. Fueron miles de militantes de toda España los que trabajaron en aquel documento de más de cien páginas. Muchos de nosotros seguimos participando muy activamente en las primarias de 2014, mediante una candidatura sin conexiones con las élites del partido (al contrario que la tuya), con la que logramos una nada desdeñable cifra de avales. Muchos de nosotros fuimos los que impulsamos tu candidatura, de una manera o de otra, en las primarias de 2017 porque, si hubieses cumplido tus compromisos, tu gestión de la Secretaría General habría culminado con éxito todo ese inmenso trabajo de la militancia durante una década, que ha terminado languideciendo por las cañerías de Ferraz. La mayoría de todos esos militantes que contribuimos en su momento al cambio en el partido, del que tú te beneficiaste, ahora están en otras organizaciones de izquierdas o, simplemente, huérfanos de representación.

Nosotros, la militancia, de hecho, hemos tenido éxito. Ganamos la batalla de las ideas. Finalmente, tras diez años, logramos poner en la Secretaría General del PSOE a un dirigente cuyo programa, cuyas promesas, cuyas resoluciones congresuales, ponían colofón a un proyecto político que llevó al PSOE a recuperar millones de votos perdidos en 2019. Eres tú el que ha fracasado, traicionando todas y cada una de las promesas, de las resoluciones congresuales y del programa electoral. Has dilapidado toda la energía política de una generación, has convertido a la militancia en el eco de tu voz y, por tanto y has transformado al PSOE en una organización estéril sobre la que ya apenas puede sembrarse nada.

Así que sí, me tengo que ir del PSOE. Para no seguir pasando vergüenza, para no sentirme cómplice bajo ningún concepto de las nefastas consecuencias sociales y políticas de tu paso por Ferraz y por Moncloa, y para no seguir engañando a nadie, por activa ni por pasiva, con la posibilidad de que el partido recupere, durante tu mandato, el lugar en el que lo puso la militancia en 2017. Eso ya no ocurrirá. Me doy de baja para permanecer fiel a las ideas socialistas, por las que fueron represaliados, incluso con la muerte, algunos de mis antepasados. Solo podré volver al PSOE cuando tú hayas abandonado su dirección y cuando la huella del «generalato sanchista» haya desaparecido por completo, algo que no será fácil.

Me despido ya, esperando que tengas un último gesto de dignidad, renunciando a tus responsabilidades antes de llevar al partido y al país al borde del abismo. Y espero también que tu despedida no vaya acompañada, como se intuye, de un dedazo para que el sanchismo perviva, habida cuenta que la mayor parte de tus más estrechos colaboradores encajan perfectamente en el perfil de arribismo, frivolidad y vacío ideológico e intelectual que está definiendo el ejercicio de tu responsabilidad. Dudo que tengas alguno de estos últimos gestos de dignidad, puesto que tu actitud es precisamente la contraria, la de apurar el cáliz hasta las heces para seguir en el poder mientras sea posible, así que me despido con una frase de Sófocles, maestro de la tragedia griega, que te convendría aplicar: más vale caer con honor que ganar con fraude.

It is very easy, and very complicated at the same time, to explain to you why you are mainly responsible for my request to leave the PSOE, both as a militant and as a sympathiser, after more than 18 years.

The easy way would be to affirm what many citizens and political analysts agree with me. That you are the most unideologised, narcissistic, fallacious and anti-democratic Secretary General that the PSOE has had since its foundation in 1879.

The difficult path forces us to explain how it is possible that you have squandered in less than four years the immense political capital that the militants gave you in 2017. A capital that, moreover, came to forge a double evolution of great historical significance in contemporary Spanish politics: on the one hand, the culmination of a long process of mobilisation and rebellion that the militants had been leading, without any support from the party elites, since 2010; on the other hand, the real possibility of convergence of that socialist rebellion with the intense social and political movements inherited from the 15-M.

The militants of the PSOE, as you recognise in your Resistance Manual, were, spontaneously, the ones who reacted to the oligarchic inertia of the party on 1 October 2016 and put you on a plate to lead the revolution that the PSOE needed. The logical consequence of that revolution would have been a more democratic and socialist party, the necessary regeneration of national politics and the essential reinvention of the Spanish left.

In this, very different people came together. Those who always believed in you, those who rebelled viscerally against the oligarchic pulse that defenestrated you, those who saw you as a lesser evil against Susana Díaz and those who, like me, understood that it was the last chance, however small, to reposition the PSOE in its natural historical space which, moreover, is the space that the society of our time needs it to occupy. In some cases, we got involved to the point of defending «our project» (we now know it was not yours) at the regional level; in my case, I covered 5,000 kilometres of Extremadura as a candidate in the regional primaries. The result is that there are now only two types of militants in the PSOE: those of us who know that you betrayed us and those who do not yet know it.

Although some of us already warned you during the 2017 primary campaign -and, in fact, you and your team retaliated against us for it, even before you became Secretary General-, your objective never had anything to do with the PSOE or with Spain. Your only objective was always yourself: to achieve power in order to fulfil an ambitious and personalistic dream of reaching Moncloa and living off politics for the rest of your life. There was nothing else behind it: no ideology, no ethics, no vision or historical mission.

Your performance as Secretary General and as President of the Government have only confirmed that early intuition that some of us pointed out four years ago: you have managed to make the PSOE as a party practically disappear, through the strangulation of its organic functioning and the messianic leadership you exercise; the relevance of the militancy has been completely volatilised, let alone its traditional critical capacity and democratic drive; you have failed to comply, almost from beginning to end, with the Resolutions of the 39th Congress that enthroned you; you have made some of the most shameful pacts in living memory with the nationalists and separatists in order to reach Moncloa and stay there; and, worst of all, you have led the PSOE, from the Government, to carry out liberal policies that have nothing to do with the Internationale you sang at the end of every rally in 2017. The latter includes a management of the COVID-19 pandemic in which, in the end, only «individual responsibility» counts, along the lines of the most ultraliberal PP of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, when, precisely, the pandemic has been a historic opportunity for the left to defend a new model of society outside of savage capitalism, in which collective decisions were capable of building a more environmentally balanced, healthier, more humane and, for all that, more socialist world; On the contrary, your only contribution has been to run in the wake of rampant neoliberalism and go to Europe to ask for credit, so much credit that indebts several generations in order to sustain the same system that existed before the pandemic, that is, a system that enriches the 1% while the 99% continues to survive under various forms of daily slavery.

Since I joined the PSOE I have always been a critical militant in the face of the need for renewal: with comrades Felipe González, Joaquín Almunia, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. But none of them ever managed to bring me close to the most unpleasant sensation I have been feeling for too many months now: that I am ashamed to serve under the acronym you lead.
There have been three red lines that I thought could never be crossed for me to leave the PSOE. The first was ethical, that is to say, that of making myself an accomplice with my militancy in a management that is harmful not only to the social classes that the PSOE claims to represent, but also, in this case, to the coexistence of an entire country. The second, ideological: the open liberal stance that your entire government has taken, and which makes the PSOE indistinguishable from what Ciudadanos would have done, or from what other European liberal parties are doing, and even in many ways from what the PP would do. The third red line, in relation to strictly democratic and state values, was the pardon of the Catalan independence supporters, which not only humiliates Spaniards who are trying to build a Catalonia loyal to coexistence and legality, but also subjects the future needs of an entire country to your personal interests of continuity in government.

This ethical, ideological, social and political catastrophe was met with your equivalent in Unidas Podemos, a Pablo Iglesias no less narcissistic, no less fallacious, and no less anti-democratic. And so, from this double betrayal of militants and citizens who believed in a renewed left, a government has emerged whose sole objective is to hold on to power for the benefit of those who hold it. A government that has already elevated the ultra-right to the highest levels of power since 1977, that has renounced any far-reaching social transformation, that legislates with its back to the working class (sometimes against it), that is deepening the political and territorial wound caused by separatism, that has contributed to digging deeper into the trap of diversity that divides the working class and, finally, that has no intention of putting its continuity in power at risk by showing its face for its supporters and voters.

Surely you no longer remember, but in 2012 you were the coordinator of the programme of the PSOE Political Conference, and from Bases en Red, the first large group at national level of militants organised to change the PSOE, we proposed a long and elaborate text as an amendment to the whole of the framework document; I was then coordinating that working group and you, albeit reluctantly, included most of our proposals in the final document, becoming since then the common thread of all the candidates who wanted to win the national primaries. Thousands of activists from all over Spain worked on that document of more than 100 pages. Many of us continued to participate very actively in the 2014 primaries, through a candidacy with no connections to the party elites (unlike yours), with which we achieved a not inconsiderable number of endorsements. Many of us were the ones who pushed for your candidacy, in one way or another, in the 2017 primaries because, if you had fulfilled your commitments, your management of the General Secretariat would have successfully culminated all that immense work of the militancy over a decade, which has ended up languishing in the pipes of Ferraz. The majority of all those militants who contributed at the time to the change in the party, from which you benefited, are now in other left-wing organisations or simply orphaned of representation.

We, the militancy, in fact, have succeeded. We won the battle of ideas. Finally, after ten years, we managed to put in the General Secretariat of the PSOE a leader whose programme, whose promises, whose congressional resolutions, put the finishing touches to a political project that led the PSOE to recover millions of votes lost in 2019. It is you who have failed, betraying each and every one of the promises, of the congressional resolutions and of the electoral programme. You have squandered all the political energy of a generation, you have turned the militancy into the echo of your voice and, therefore, you have transformed the PSOE into a sterile organisation on which hardly anything can be sown.

So yes, I have to leave the PSOE. So as not to continue being embarrassed, so as not to feel complicit under any circumstances in the disastrous social and political consequences of your time in Ferraz and Moncloa, and so as not to continue deceiving anyone, actively or passively, with the possibility that the party will recover, during your mandate, the place in which the militancy put it in 2017. That will no longer happen. I am resigning in order to remain faithful to the socialist ideas for which some of my ancestors were repressed, even by death. I will only be able to return to the PSOE when you have left its leadership and when the imprint of the «Sanchist generalship» has completely disappeared, something that will not be easy.

I say goodbye now, hoping that you will make a last gesture of dignity, renouncing your responsibilities before taking the party and the country to the brink of the abyss. And I also hope that your farewell will not be accompanied, as one senses, by a dedazo so that Sanchismo can survive, given that most of your closest collaborators fit perfectly into the profile of careerism, frivolity and ideological and intellectual emptiness that is defining the exercise of your responsibility. I doubt that you have any of these last gestures of dignity, given that your attitude is precisely the opposite, that of sucking the cup to the dregs in order to remain in power as long as possible, so I leave you with a phrase from Sophocles, master of Greek tragedy, which you would do well to apply: it is better to fall with honour than to win with fraud.
