Nació el 12 de julio de 1839 en la localidad cacereña de Montánchez.1 Cadete en 1855, ascendió a alférez en 1858. En 1859 se incorporó al ejército que partía a la Guerra de África, siendo herido en la acción del 14 de enero y condecorado en el campo de batalla. Tomó parte en los acontecimientos de 1866 y 1869. Fue gobernador de Melilla, tomando posesión del mando el 30 de septiembre de 1891,2 y ejerció el cargo hasta 1893. Margallo fue ascendido después a general. Tras una ofensiva de los rifeños, quedó atrapado en el fuerte de Cabrerizas Altas, donde cayó durante los combates librados en los días 27 y 28 de octubre,3 en la que se conoce como la Guerra de Margallo.
Sus restos mortales se encuentran en el Panteón Margallo, del Cementerio Municipal de la Purísima Concepción de Melilla (España). Fue bisabuelo del ministro José Manuel García-Margallo.
He was born on July 12, 1839 in the town of Montánchez. 1 Cadet in 1855, he was promoted to lieutenant in 1858. In 1859 he joined the army that was leaving for the War in Africa, being wounded in the action of January 14 and decorated on the battlefield. He took part in the events of 1866 and 1869. He was governor of Melilla, taking command on September 30, 1891,2 and held the position until 1893. Margallo was later promoted to general. After an offensive by the Rif people, he was trapped in the Cabrerizas Altas fort, where he fell during the fighting on October 27 and 28, 3 in what is known as the Margallo War.
His mortal remains are in the Margallo Pantheon, of the Municipal Cemetery of the Immaculate Conception of Melilla (Spain). He was the great-grandfather of Minister José Manuel García-Margallo.
