ARMINDA. My friend from Playa de las Canteras.

ENGLISH

She hides behind the palm tree and her name is Arminda. I hadn’t seen her for a long time, because when I moved to the south I had to change Las Canteras beach for Maspalomas beach.

Maspalomas beach is one of the wonders we have in Gran Canaria, but Las Canteras is a unique beach, different from all the others, original.

I used to visit it almost every day from Monday to Friday, more in winter than in summer. I would walk first to Playa Chica and on the way back I would go for a swim in that corner of La Puntilla with such a sea flavour, a sailor’s flavour. It is a part of the beach that tastes of freedom, and for those of us who have lived next to it for a long time, it even tastes of nostalgia.

The walk and the swim at Las Canteras Beach at seven in the morning is a pleasure that you always want to repeat, it stays in your body and soul for the whole day, and at night you tell your pillow about it as if you had come from the Pérez Galdós Theatre after an evening at the opera.

And Arminda was always there, swaying with the waves and always accompanied by three or four other friends. She is blue, one of the smallest, and I always imagine her waiting for the island sailor who arrives with his trousers rolled up and his cigarette dangling from his lip.

A few days ago I was in Las Palmas and I went to see it, from the promenade, and I took the photo where it is behind the palm tree. But she is also in the other photos taken much longer ago.

It has always been there and I think it will be there for many years to come. Waiting for someone to visit it on winter mornings.
