8 de diembre de 2020, 17:40 horas, acabo de salir de mi confortable bungalow en Maspalomas a tirar la basura. He comido formidablemente bien, y voy a tirar la bolsa de basura porque huele demasiado al magnífico pescado que me he comido. En el cuarto de la basura oigo ruidos, y cuando abro la puerta me encuentro a un hombre, de unos cincuenta años, con bolsas de plástico,  que me pide disculpas, que ya se va, que perdone………

Le pregunto qué hace y me dice que coger comida, que no quiere robar, que no tiene ayudas, y que algo tiene que comer……………..le pido que espere, aunque hace amago de irse,….. que entro un momento y le traigo algo.

Y cogi algo de la nevera, de mi llena nevera, y sali deprisa por si se  marchaba. Me estaba esperando, sin las bolsas, quizás tiradas a la basura como le pedí, con las manos bajas y los ojos llorosos. Me dijo que es de Marruecos, de Nador, que llevaba un año aqui………….Le di lo que le había cogido de casa, algo de dinero y se fue rápido. Con verguenza.

Entré en el complejo y me tuve que sentar en el banco que está justo en la entrada a la recepción. Unos segundos para encontrarme, para sosegarme, pero inmediatamente me levanté y me vine a mi ordenador a escribir lo que les estoy contando.

¿Qué estamos haciendo con la maravilla que tenemos en nuestras manos? ¿Qué hacen los responsables políticos, los responsables sociales, de Canarias, de España, de Europa, del mundo, qué hacen? Desde luego ganar mucho dinero, miles de euros, algunos me dirán que esto tiene algo de demagogia, pero están en esos puestos de dirección social para evitar que pasen estas cosas, para trabajar por la gente más necesitada como este hombre que vi recogiendo comida en la basura.

No puedo admitir que esto sea normal. Los políticos españoles, y los de todo el mundo seguramente, están muy bien posicionados, pero no cumplen con sus responsabilidades sociales. No podemos admitir que muchos seres humanos vivan en la indigencia. Nos quedaría algo más de dignidad a todos si por lo menos el trabajo principal de todos los cargos públicos fuera dirigido al pueblo.

December 8, 2020, 5:40 p.m., I just left my comfortable bungalow in Maspalomas to throw away the trash. I’ve eaten formidablely well, and I’m going to throw away the garbage bag because it smells too much like the magnificent fish I’ve eaten. In the garbage room I hear noises, and when I open the door I find a man, about fifty years old, with plastic bags, who apologizes to me, who is already leaving, to forgive………

I ask him what he does and he tells me to take food, that he does not want to steal, that he has no aids, and that something has to eat…………….. I ask you to wait, though you amago to leave,….. I’ll come in for a moment and get you something.

And I took something from the fridge, from my full fridge, and I came out fast in case he left. He was waiting for me, without the bags, maybe thrown away as I asked, his hands down and his eyes weeping. He told me that he is from Morocco, from Nador, who had been here for a year…………. I gave him what I’d taken from home, some money and he left fast. Shame on you.
I walked into the complex and had to sit on the bench which is right at the entrance to the front desk. A few seconds to find myself, to hold on, but I immediately got up and came to my computer to write down what I’m telling you.

What are we doing with the wonder in our hands? What do policy makers, social leaders, the Canary Islands, Spain, Europe, the world do, what do they do? Of course I make a lot of money, thousands of euros, some will tell me that this has some demagoguery, but they are in those social management positions to prevent these things from happening, to work for the people most in need like this man I saw picking up food in the trash.

I can’t admit this is normal. Spanish politicians, and those around the world are surely very well positioned, but they do not fulfill their social responsibilities. We cannot admit that many human beings live in destitution. We would have a little more dignity left for all if at least the main work of all public office were directed to the people.
