La Cantata del Mencey Loco se grabó en Madrid en 1974, y su director Elfidio Alonso lo explicaba asi:
Se trata del mencey de Anaga, llamado Beneharo. Víctima de una trampa y herido de muerte, se lanzó desde las cumbres de Anaga hasta el mar. Una bella leyenda que tiene una parte lírica, otra muy dramática y un argumento. La letra de esta cantata ha sido tomada de un largo poema prácticamente desconocido de Ramón Gil Roldán, aunque nosotros le hayamos cambiado el sentido. Nosotros le hemos quitado los vítores al invasor, y ante la pregunta de si murió la raza decimos que la raza todavía vive.
The Cantata del Mencey Loco was recorded in Madrid in 1974, and Elfidio Alonso explained it as follows:
It is about the mencey of Anaga, called Beneharo. Victim of a trap and mortally wounded, he threw himself from the peaks of Anaga to the sea. A beautiful legend that has a lyrical part, a very dramatic part and a plot. The lyrics of this cantata are taken from a long, practically unknown poem by Ramón Gil Roldán, although we have changed the meaning. We have taken away the cheers for the invader, and when asked if the race is dead, we say that the race is still alive.
