Antigüedad de las Islas Canarias. Vulcanismo

Antiquity of the Canary Islands. Volcanism

The oldest islands are the oriental ones, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which emerged 16-22 million years ago, followed by the central islands, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Gomera, with ages ranging from 8.5 to 14.5 million years ago. Today it is generally accepted that the Canary Islands began to be built in the middle of the Tertiary Era due to the accumulation of volcanic emissions on the Atlantic oceanic crust.

The Canary Islands are part of an archipelago of volcanic origin, that is, as a set of islands that have been formed by the constructive action of volcanic activity in the ocean when the magma, coming from the interior of the Earth, ascends through cracks or fractures of the oceanic crust, and accumulates on the ocean floor until it emerges above the level of the sea surface. This volcanic activity, maintained for millions of years, remains today as attested by the eruption of the Teneguía, on the island of La Palma, in 1971, and other manifestations such as seismic activity, fumes of sulphur gases and water vapour.

Origin of the Aborigines of the Canary Islands

The term ancient canaries is used to name the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands

before the Castilian conquest, started in Lanzarote in 1402 and completed in Tenerife in 1496. Although popularly called Guanches, this place-name refers only to the ancient settlers of Tenerife.

There are several theories about the provenance of this people, but to this day almost all converge in their Berber origin (people of North Africa). The date that has solidated for the arrival of these first

villagers have been, according to some, from 2500 BC; for others, from 1000 BC.

There is an endoc of each of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands. In El Hierro they are known as Bimbaches. In La Palma as Benahoaritas or Auaritas. In Tenerife as Guanches. Gomeritas or Gomeros in La Gomera. Canaries for those of Gran Canaria and Majos for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The Conquest of the Canary Islands 1402 – 1450

The conquest of the Canary Islands was the process by which this archipelago, inhabited by Aboriginal peoples, was incorporated by a military occupation to the Crown of Castile throughout the fifteenth century. Two stages can be distinguished in this process: the stately conquest, carried out by the nobility in exchange for a vassalage pact, and the royal conquest, carried out directly by the Crown during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs.

Stately conquest. It is known by this name the conquest carried out by the nobility, for its own benefit and without a direct participation of the Crown, which grants the right of conquest in exchange for a pact of vassalage of the noble conqueror towards the Crown. Within it are distinguished the known as Betencurian or Norman conquest, carried out by Jean de Béthencourt and Gadifer de La Salle between 1402 and 1405 and which affected the islands of Lanzarote, El Hierro and Fuerteventura. The other phase is known as the Castilian stately conquest, and was carried out by Castilian nobles who appropriated, through purchases, assignments and marriages, the first conquered islands and incorporated the island of La Gomera around 1450.

Realenga Conquest. This term defines the conquest carried out directly by the Crown of Castile during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, who armed and partly financed the conquest of the islands that were yet to be dominated: Gran Canaria, La Palma and Tenerife. In 1496 the conquest came to an end with the domain of the island of Tenerife, integrating the Canary archipelago in the Crown of Castile. The royal conquest took place between 1478 and 1496.

After the Conquest

After the conquest the population declined for deaths from wars and epidemics and also for the conquests of Granada and America. The crown took action by incentivizing the settlement on the islands of new settlers who would join the surviving Aborigines, highlighting the Andalusians and the Portuguese. The Canarian society would be forged through the multiculturalism of its population.

In the seventeenth century the population of the Canary Islands continued to grow to reach one hundred thousand inhabitants, Tenerife being the most populated island. In the eighteenth century it reached the hundred and sixty thousand inhabitants, being the most important populations Las Palmas, Telde, La Laguna and Santa Cruz de la Palma. The first hierarchical layer was the nobility, then the bourgeoisie, craftsmen and peasants and the last the pawns, slaves and prisoners.

In the nineteenth century the export of cochineal and then banana, tomato and potatoes continued, and the degree of dependence of the Canarian economy increased.

The Canarian ports, and especially the Port of La Luz in Gran Canaria, will take advantage of their situation as a mandatory point of bound for the navigation of European ships, generating, under the port, numerous businesses and economic activities, which will provoke an intense migration movement towards Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
